Today companies are working in a very different business environment. This is a global and virtual environment in which many new tools have been developed and have become essential. These tools include e-Business solutions.

This is why the railway supply industry is proactively facing the challenges and opportunities that information technology is offering to businesses. It recently began researching and co-operating on various initiatives in this area through the auspices of UNIFE. New ways of co-operation across the whole industry are being assessed and tested that are likely to improve the supply chain management in all its forms. Fostering e-Engineering, e-Manufacturing, e-Procurement and e-Working will be the driving force for a major change in the industry business environment.

In this regard, current and past experiences of other industries are being closely researched. Many of these efforts are culminated in the UNIFE e-Business-working group where competing industries come up with common solutions to common problems. This will allow the railway supply industry to operate effectively and productively in a changing environment.

To this end UNIFE and UIC have collaborated for the last 5th Internet Club Forum hosted by the International Union of Railways (UIC) on October 11-12, 2001 that brought together more than 170 participants representing 68 different supply and operating companies from 27 countries. The title of the forum was "From e-procurement to electronic marketplaces". With e-business topping the agenda for UIC and UNIFE members, the two organisations have decided to set up a taskforce on e-procurement/marketplaces, following the signing of an MoU in June 2000 in Paris.
