UNIFE will be present at the TRA2018 in Vienna

20/
MAR 2018

The Transport Research Arena 2018 (TRA 2018) will take place in Vienna, Austria between 16 and 19 April 2018. Under the heading of “A digital Era for Transport: solutions for society, economy and environment”, TRA 2018 will explore, discuss and demonstrate these major paradigm shifts that are specifically directed at important areas of our lives, such as transport, mobility, logistics and industrial production.

TRA 2018 & UNIFE

TRA is the European multi-modal transport research event bringing together the European Commission, Member States, European Technology Platforms (ERRAC for the rail sector) and the European transport industry.

Through the ERRAC European Technology Platform, UNIFE has been involved in the organisation of TRA to promote the Research & Innovation (R&I) activities of the European rail supply industry. TRA 2018 will be the opportunity for UNIFE to:

1) Convey key messages to EU decision makers on the future of the Rail R&I programme (e.g. Preparation of the next European Research Framework Programme – FP9) and the establishment of a new rail research PPP – Shift2Rail 2.0
2) Promote the ERRAC Rail 2050 Vision
3) Promote UNIFE’s Vision for Shift2Rail 2.0 (based on UNIFE's 9 Key Enablers)
4) Report on the progress of various R&I projects (e.g. Shift2Rail, European GNSS Agency)
5) Meet EU and Member States’ decision-makers
6) Meet rail stakeholders, EU agencies and associations
7) Present UNIFE’s services to UNIFE members in the field of R&I and meet potential new UNIFE members

TRA 2018 is a key event to show how innovative the European Rail Supply Industry is in order to reach the rail sector’s vision: “Rail Transport is the backbone of the mobility of the future for goods and passengers”.

UNIFE STAND: VISIT US!
The UNIFE Director General Philippe Citroën and his team will be happy to welcome you and present UNIFE’s activities at stand C04. Please contact Nicolas Furio (nicolas.furio@unife.org), should you want to arrange a meeting during TRA in order to find out more about UNIFE and the Research & Innovation priorities in rail.

We will present on our stand stand 14 European Research and Innovation projects in which we are involved:

ASTRAIL aims to increase the railway sector’s efficiency and safety. ASTRAIL will contribute to enhance the signalling and automation of the railway system thanks to innovative solutions that exploit cutting edge technologies already present in other sectors, such as the avionics or the automotive sector.

DYNAFREIGHT (Innovative technical solutions for improved train DYNAmics and operation of longer FREIGHt Trains) will contribute to the next railway freight propulsion concepts addressing two main topics: freight running gear for locomotives and operation of long freight trains.

ETALON’s main objective is the adaptation of energy harvesting methodologies for trackside and on-board signalling and communication. ETALON will contribute to the enhancement of train integrity functionalities, providing a suitable energy supply for on-board train integrity detection and a robust radio communication system between vehicles.

ERSAT GGC aims to fill the last but fundamental gap before putting into service the ERSAT. This system will enable the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) to use satellite services, after it has been demonstrated that satellite technology can withstand the certification process for rail operations.

GoF4R’s (Governance of the Interoperability Framework for Rail and Intermodal Mobility) primary objective is to define sustainable governance for the Interoperability Framework (IF) that will create the right conditions to introduce seamless mobility services and foster the development of multi-modal travel services.

IN2DREAMS (INtelligent solutions 2ward the Development of Railway Energy and Asset Management Systems in Europe) will develop and demonstrate a modular cloud-based open data management platform (ODM) facilitating ubiquitous support of both energy and asset services.

In2Rail (Innovative Intelligent Rail) aims to set the foundations for a resilient, consistent, cost efficient, and high capacity European network by delivering important building blocks that unlock the innovation potential in Shift2Rail. Innovative technologies will be explored, and the resulting concepts will be embedded in a system framework where infrastructure, information management, maintenance techniques, energy and engineering are integrated, optimised, shared and exploited.

INNOWAG (INNOvative monitoring and predictive maintenance solutions on lightweight WAGon) aims to develop intelligent cargo monitoring and predictive maintenance solutions integrated in a novel concept of lightweight wagon, which would respond to major challenges in rail freight competitiveness, in relation to the increase of transport capacity, logistic capability and an improved RAMS and lower LCC.

IT2Rail (Information Technologies for Shift2Rail) aims to create a complete multimodal travel system, connecting the first and last mile to long distance journeys combining air, rail, coach and other services, through the integration of an abundance of travel services supported by innovative digital technologies.
www.it2rail.eu

Roll2Rail aims to develop key technologies that will overcome hurdles to innovation in rolling stock development and forms part of a longer-term strategy towards revolutionising today’s rolling stock. The project focuses on technological innovations in different subsystems of the vehicles which contribute to identified objectives of the vehicle and railway system level in terms of capacity, reliability, efficiency, comfort and life cycle cost improvements.

RUN2RAIL (Innovative RUNning gear soluTiOnsfor new dependable, sustainable, intelligent and comfortable RAIL vehicles) will explore several technical developments for future running gear, looking into ways to design trains that are more reliable, lighter, less damaging to the track, more comfortable and less noisy.

SMaRTE (Smart Maintenance and the Rail Traveller Experience) brings together two related but distinct areas of research. Smart maintenance and human factors are coupled with digitisation and the use of information to enhance decision making, either by industry players in respect of maintenance decisions, or by users of the system in employing smart applications to navigate the rail system and its interaction with other modes.

STARS (Satellite Technology for Advanced Railway Signalling) aims to fill the gap between the ERTMS needs for safety-critical applications and E-GNSS services, through the characterisation of the railway environment and the assessment of GNSS performance in that environment.
www.stars-rail.eu

ST4RT’s (Semantic Transformations for Rail Transportation) primary objective is research in semantic, ontology-based automation of transformations between heterogeneous data formats and its application to a complex ‘after-sales’ process use case in an actual run-time demonstration scenario.
