Rail Freight

Rail freight transport can assume an important role for a sustainable transport system in Europe. It is the most environmentally friendly mode of transport and still has great growth potential across the EU. Rail freight is particularly attractive on long distances. However, rail freight today encounters many difficulties when crossing borders in Europe.

For this reason, the European Commission published a proposal in December 2008 that foresees the creation of European rail freight corridors. On these corridors, freight should receive particular attention and sometimes priority over certain categories of passenger transport. Infrastructure managers should cooperate to ensure flexible and smooth running of the corridors while minimising overall delays. On the whole, the proposal aims at improving the performance of rail freight.
