Interoperability - The tool to enhance competitiveness

The interoperability directive 2008/57/EC aims at removing the technical barriers for European railway integration and the creation of a truly European railway market. Promoting interoperability has been an ongoing process since the 1990s to enhance European market opening without compromising railway safety.
In this context, the European Railway Agency (ERA) has an important role to play in the elaboration of Technical Specifications of Interoperability (TSIs) for the different rail subsystems. UNIFE is highly involved in their elaboration as a supporting body at the ERA. Much progress has been made in recent years, however, the process is far from completed.
UNIFE therefore supports a further strengthening of the interoperability of European railway systems through the extension of the scope of TSIs, a strengthened cross-acceptance of certifications and an enhanced role of ERA.
