Promoted by UNIFE and with sustainable support by Bombardier Transportation, Alstom Transport, Siemens Transportation Systems, AnsaldoBreda, IRIS (International Railway Industry Standard) complements the internationally recognized ISO 9001 quality standard adding specific requirements needed by the railway industry.

The UNIFE initiative has been modeled on similar quality standards already in place in the aerospace, automotive and the food industries. For this reason, the railway industry has established close links with leading representative of these industries in order to learn from their experience and to avoid possible mistakes.

IRIS intends to develop and establish an internationally recognized standard that encompass the evaluation process as well as an audit and scoring methodology. This new system envisions independent, accredited certification bodies to carry out the evaluations. All suppliers and rolling stock manufacturers are thus able to seek certification based on the new standard.

This certificate will replace individual certification by at least the four founders of this initiative (Alstom Transport, AnsaldoBreda, Siemens Transportation and Bombardier Transportation).
