UNIFE JOINS FORCES WITH BUSINESSES TO SUPPORT A 40% GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS REDUCTION TARGET IN THE EU 2030 FRAMEWORK FOR CLIMATE & ENERGY POLICIES

UNIFE joined forces with around 40 companies and sectorial associations (including Alstom, CER…) in a letter sent to EU Heads of State and Government. The letter aims at supporting to the European Commission’s proposal for a 40% greenhouse gas emissions reduction target and for the strengthening of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme.

After the discussions that took place in the Environment and Energy Councils, Heads of State and Government will discuss the framework at the European Council meeting on 20-21 March 2014.

As UNIFE has repeatedly advocated, the strategic commitments towards 2050 taken at EU level such as the 2011 Transport White Paper require considerable efforts regarding the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, especially from the transport sector. UNIFE therefore believes that the European Commission’s proposed target I the minimum necessary to secure cost-effective decarbonisation in Europe.
